Charging Levels

We know that everyone who buys an Electric Vehicle is excited to add their brand new EV home chargers to the decor of their home but before you install your home charger you will want to have an understanding of the different types of charging levels. Different chargers make sense for different people and different situations. Most public charging stations are typically level 2 allowing for DC fast charging giving you a quick boost to get on your way, while level 1 chargers require longer periods of charging.

Level 1 Charger

This type of charger is ideal for people that are not constantly on the road and can allow their car to charge overnight. Level 1 Chargers use an 120-volt household outlet. These type of chargers are typically included in the purchase of an EV. Unlike level 2 chargers you likely do not have to require professional installation.

Level 2 Charger

The level 2 charger is the more efficient charger and quick charger between the two. The Level 2 charger adds between 10-60 miles of range per hour compared to 2-5 miles for the level 1. The charging efficiency of the level 2 chargers is also greater at 90% efficiency compared to the 80% efficiency of a level 1 charger.

Choosing The right Charger

With all the information about Level 1 Chargers and Level 2 Chargers at your fingertips it can still be difficult making the decision on which works best for your situation. That is why it is important to choose a trusted brand such as General Motors and see how each Level 1 or Level 2 charger differs.

General Motors offers a wide variety of different EV Home chargers that you can choose from. These chargers range from simple and affordable level 1 duel-level cord set chargers to the powerful GM PowerUp+ level 2 chargers.

Simple Home Installation

Level 2 chargers require being hardwired into your home or installed into a 240-volt circuit which will most likely require a professional. Chevy works with Qmerit North America's most trusted installer for EV chargers.

Level 1 chargers do not require any type of special installation or a professional. These chargers can be plugged directly into any standard 120-volt outlet.

Before any installation of your Home Charger consult with a EV Charging specialist such as Chevy's partners at Qmerit to make sure your charger is being installed correctly.
